Welcome to reading with Mrs. Daniels.   I'm looking forward to a great school year!!:)

Our class is an AIS (Academic Intervention Services) Reading/Writing class. The following will be goals for us this school year:

Reading

Ø      To provide students with strategies to decode new

     or unfamiliar words.

Ø      To develop and understand new vocabulary.

Ø      To provide students with strategies to improve

     reading comprehension prior to read, while reading,

     and after reading.

Writing

Ø      To provide students with a format for writing and an opportunity to develop

     their independent thinking process.

Ø      Opportunities to practice creative, narrative and expository writing.

Listening

Ø      Provide opportunities for students to listen to short stories and articles to practice note taking.

Ø      Active and respectful listening while students are collaborating and presenting work.

Speaking

Ø      To provide opportunities for students to respond to literature in a comfortable environment.

Ø      To provide students with a safe and respectful place to share their own developing work.

Through classroom activities we will work towards several goals.  The needs of the students will drive their instruction in the classroom.  The students will be reading material at their independent and instruction level.  Our instructional level will not always be the same as our grade level as we acquire and practice new reading skills.  Therefore, the curriculum is modified to meet the needs of the students.

Finally, through great books and rich discussion I hope to create an enjoyable environment where students learn to appreciate (and maybe even love) to read.
