At Williamson Middle School, sixth grade students are strengthening their non-fiction reading and writing skills through hands-on research projects designed to expand both their knowledge and confidence.

Students rotate through different subject areas each quarter, giving them the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics throughout the school year. For each project, students are encouraged to choose a subject that sparks their curiosity—often something they might not typically read about—helping to broaden their interests while reinforcing critical literacy skills.

A key component of the project is the research process. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of using the school library, including how to locate sources and gather information. For many, this marks their first experience working with reference books, as they learn how to collect data, take notes, and properly cite their sources.

Beyond research, students focus on developing strong writing habits. They learn how to organize their findings, revise and edit their work, and, importantly, put information into their own words. This emphasis on originality helps students better understand and retain what they read while avoiding simple copy-and-paste habits.

The project culminates in student presentations, where sixth graders use classroom technology to share their findings with peers. These presentations not only reinforce their understanding of the material but also help build communication and public speaking skills.

The project is also designed to be inclusive, offering all students— including those in special education programs—the opportunity to present their work alongside their classmates. This collaborative environment supports confidence-building and ensures every student can participate meaningfully.

Modeled after successful programs in area districts, Williamson Middle School’s research initiative reflects a commitment to developing strong, independent learners. By combining research, writing, and presentation skills, the program equips students with the tools they need to navigate and understand non-fiction texts—both in the classroom and beyond.
