Return to School Information - February 5, 2021

Hello Williamson Families and Happy Friday!

Another long message here.  Please read it all carefully and let us know if you have any questions.  

Return to Four Days a Week for All Students K-12:

All in-person students in grades K-12 will return to school for four days a week (M, T, Th and F) beginning on Monday, March 15th, 2021.  All fully remote students will also participate in period by period virtual  instruction four days a week (M, T, Th, F).  ALL students will participate in fully remote PRIDE Wednesdays, which will maintain the same schedule moving forward.  UPK will maintain the same schedule it has now.  We will continue to follow all of our safety protocols.  Masks will be required at all times except breakfast/lunch/snack.  Social distancing will be in place whenever possible and see-through barriers may also be used as an added safety measure in some instances when distance AND mask wearing is not possible.

The school days will run with the usual start and end times and we will have 10th period support in place at the MS and HS.  

We are hoping that we have some of you who are able to volunteer to help with some outstanding challenges.  If you are willing and able to help monitor students or create outdoor learning spaces, please complete this survey.  All volunteers must be approved by our Board of Education.  If you are not already an approved volunteer, it is a very easy process.  Just complete the volunteer packet.  It can be found under DISTRICT on our website.  If you would like a hard copy, contact your child’s building and they will send one home for you.  

Here is a brief description from each building about what the day will look like for students when they return. 

High School:  At the high school we are returning with many of our routines intact.  Students will follow their daily 9 period AB schedule.  Students who are fully remote will log into each class each day, with the exception of study hall and lunch.  Before school, students should continue to report to the cafeteria, auditorium, and library, and we are opening the study hall room.  Homeroom will stay in first period classes, but we look forward to gathering grade levels for class meetings in our larger spaces occasionally.  

We will follow our safety protocols, and wear masks at all times unless having a snack or lunch.  Students will be allowed to go take a mask break as needed, but they have adapted so well and are doing a great job of keeping each other safe.  Lunches will be split into halves to allow for distancing, and students will be assigned a supervised space to be for the half of their lunch period not in the cafeteria.  

We are able to accommodate many of our classes with the existing protocols and space we have, and will be adding desk barriers for use in larger class sections.  We do not anticipate the use of overflow space being needed for our larger sections but are still finalizing those details.  If we can reduce the sizes of some sections by shifting students into other sections, we will consider that as well.   10th period will be used for in-person student support.     

Middle School:  The Middle School is working to transition to a 4 day student attendance model.  As we prepare to have the majority of our students return to school in person, the staff and administration are taking into consideration the safety protocols necessary for a safe return.

As we transition, the number of students that can safely attend each class is dependent on the physical size of the individual classroom. Social distancing and masking will be maintained.

Certain classrooms in the Middle School have limited student capacity.  This is due in part to the square footage of the classroom and number of students.  Those classrooms with student enrollment above safety capacity will establish a rotation in which some students will live zoom into class from close proximity.  Our support staff will ensure that all our students will have access to the necessary curriculum and teacher support.  The majority of Middle School classes are able to fit safely in individual classrooms.

Students will continue to maintain socially distant protocols as part of our morning procedures in the cafeteria and auditorium before going to first period at 7:25.  Staggered hallway passing times will continue.  

The Middle School schedule will be a typical A/B schedule. 

Elementary School:  In the return plan for the elementary school, students will continue to be masked and we will maintain social distancing whenever possible.   At each grade level students  will be in groups of 10-12 moving to different instructional stations during the course of the day.  In some instances students will remain with their classroom teacher for the day and will not need to travel.  

Special area classes and playground time will continue to be in the daily schedule for our students.  Grades 1-4 will eat in the cafeteria 6ft apart, as they currently do.  UPK will maintain the same schedule it has now.

Busing:  Students will receive updated busing information.  Students will still be required to wear masks at all times while riding on the school bus.  We will continue to minimize the capacity on our buses to the greatest extent possible.

 

IMPORTANT:  Because our return plans rely so heavily on having accurate numbers of students who will be in person or remote, we are holding families to their decision regarding attendance models for the remainder of the year. You all completed this survey in December.  If you have questions, reach out to your child’s building administrators.  Likewise, if you have an emergency situation, please reach out and we will do all we can, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate any change requests.


COVID Cases Update:  This week we have had notification of the following positive cases:

ES - 2 students (1 who is fully remote)

MS - 1 student

HS - 1 student

Athletics Update:

Boys and girls JV and Varsity basketball and Varsity Wrestling practices have started.  The Wayne County Athletic Association has ruled that there will be no spectators at athletic events.  We will revisit this decision after the first games have been played.  We know that parents/guardians are anxious to watch their children play and will make that happen if at all possible.  We will keep you updated if this rule changes.
